The Valley of Flowers is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Spread over 87 square kilometers, this enchanting valley is home to over 600 species of flowering plants, many of which are rare and endemic to the region. During the monsoon season (July-September), the valley transforms into a spectacular carpet of wildflowers.
Discovered by British mountaineer Frank Smythe in 1931, the valley sits at an altitude of 3,658 meters and is surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The trek also includes a visit to the sacred Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site at 4,329 meters, making this journey a perfect blend of natural beauty and spiritual significance.
Early morning drive from Haridwar to Govindghat (275 km, 10-11 hrs) via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Joshimath. The route follows the Alaknanda River through spectacular gorges and valleys. Arrive at Govindghat by evening. Check in at hotel. Overnight.
Trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria (10 km, 5-6 hrs). The well-maintained trail follows the Lakshman Ganga river through beautiful mountain scenery. Option for helicopter to Ghangaria for those who prefer. Arrive at Ghangaria (3,049m), the base camp for both Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Rest and overnight.
The highlight of the trip! Trek from Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers National Park (4 km one way). Enter the valley and be mesmerized by a breathtaking carpet of wildflowers - blue poppies, primulas, marigolds, daisies, orchids, and hundreds more species. Spend the entire day exploring, photographing, and soaking in this natural paradise. Return to Ghangaria by evening.
Early morning trek to Hemkund Sahib (6 km, 4-5 hrs). The trail climbs steeply to reach the sacred glacial lake at 4,329 meters, surrounded by seven peaks. Visit the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara and Lakshman Temple on the lake shore. Take a holy dip in the icy waters. Return to Ghangaria. Overnight.
Trek down from Ghangaria to Govindghat (10 km, 3-4 hrs). The descent is easier and offers beautiful views. Drive from Govindghat to Joshimath (25 km). Visit the famous Narsingh Temple and Shankaracharya Math. Explore the town. Overnight at Joshimath.
Early morning departure for Haridwar/Rishikesh (260 km, 9-10 hrs). Carry home memories of the enchanting Valley of Flowers and the sacred Hemkund Sahib. Drop at Haridwar/Rishikesh. Trip ends.
